Burn the Village, Feel the Warmth

This work of art was completed in 2013 as part of the ‘Call of the Mall’ art exhibition in the area around Utrecht Central Station. In 2011, many young people across Britain left a trail of destruction in various cities with riots, arson, looting and brawls. The reason remains unclear, but a traditional African saying was quoted on social media: “If the young are not initiated into the village, they will burn it down just to feel its warmth.” In other words, alienated young people will attract attention to be seen. Artist Nathan Coley explores how he can influence perceptions of our environment with his works of art, such as this striking text.
