Artist Jan van Munster often uses contradiction in his work: day and night, light and dark. He employs this concept at the Rijksgebouw, with the IK (meaning I) lighting up in the dark.

IK lights up in the dark outside, while a second IK is displayed on a panel inside. In a continuous sentence, the word IK repeatedly shines to convey a message about our existence: “Somewhere I am everything, home, everywhere, unfamiliar, nothing, nowhere.” The IK sign regularly appears in Jan van Munster’s work in various forms.
