Pandhof of the Museum Catharijneconvent
The courtyard of the St Catherine’s Convent Museum forms part of the medieval convent that nowadays houses the museum for religious art.
The courtyard of the convent complex is the former monastery garden of the Johanniter Order. The convent included a hospital wing with 24 beds – at the time the largest hospital in the city. In the courtyard garden, herbs were grown for the hospital, but also for use in the kitchen.
Layout
The layout of the convent garden is fairly simple. There are four grassy lawns, and in each corner there is a tree that makes reference to the Bible, such as the Judas tree. In the centre, there is a sculpture from 1986 by the Swiss sculptor Max Bill.
During the summer months, the garden of the St Catherine’s Convent Museum is the backdrop for a series of concerts.
