The University Library
The University Library at the Utrecht Science Park is an extraordinary example of modern architecture.
History
Utrecht University’s University Library has a long history. In 1636, the year the university was founded, the city library on Janskerkhof began being used as the university’s library. In 1820, the collection moved to Wittevrouwenstraat, and over the years the books were scattered across the university’s various buildings.
In 2004, 4.2 million books were moved to the modern property at the Utrecht Science Park.
Architecture
The library was designed by the architect Wiel Arets in the shape of a black, rectangular box. The facade is mainly made of anti-glare glass with a leaf pattern printed on it.
The building houses the library, parking garages, catering facilities and several shops. The library has around 1,000 study spaces and more than 4.2 million books, and draws large numbers of visitors from all around the world. In 2005, the design was awarded the Rietveld Prize.

Monday to Friday: 8 am – 10:30 pm
Saturday: 10 am – 6 pm
Sunday: 10 am – 10:30 pm
