Magnificent museums
Housed in a former monastery, Museum Catharijneconvent is the ultimate destination for religious art in the Netherlands. Located at Lange Nieuwstraat 38, the museum showcases an impressive collection of art, ranging from centuries-old paintings and religious artefacts to thematic, surprising exhibitions. It offers a fresh perspective on religious heritage, exploring topics such as the influence of the 1960s on the church and the traditions behind religious holidays. After immersing yourself in the art, unwind with a coffee at the museum café.
Just around the corner on Agnietenstraat 1, the newly renovated Centraal Museum awaits. This vibrant museum features an inspirational mix of old masters, contemporary art, history and fashion. It regularly (at least four times a year) spotlights recent work by Utrecht-based artists and houses an extensive collection by renowned designer and architect Gerrit Rietveld, including many of his iconic pieces of furniture. When the weather permits, why not enjoy a delicious coffee in the museum’s outdoor garden?

Dinner and a movie: a match made in heaven
Utrecht boasts a remarkable film scene, with independent cinemas Louis Hartlooper, Springhaver and Slachtstraat offering unique and intimate cinematic experiences. Fun fact: Louis Hartlooper is housed in a listed building from 1928, designed in the Amsterdam School architectural style and originally a police station. These cultural gems not only screen exceptional films but also serve great food, with Springhaver doubling as a charming pub where you can enjoy an impressive range of craft beers.
From De Stijl to the Amsterdam School
Architecture enthusiasts will love the Rietveld Schröder House, a modernist masterpiece designed in 1924 by architect Gerrit Rietveld in collaboration with Truus Schröder. You can also explore the Rietveld Route on foot or, of course, by bike. The free routes, which follow Rietveld’s life and work, are provided by the Dutch World Heritage Foundation.
Just a stone’s throw from Utrecht Central Station stands the Inkwell (the Inktpot), the largest brick building in the Netherlands. The striking structure, constructed with 22 million bricks, showcases the characteristic Amsterdam School style. And don’t forget to look up to see the iconic UFO sculpture by artist Marc Ruygrok perched on the roof.
A new world awaits
Discover the unknown in Doloris Anoma Maze; an artistic experience that invites all your senses to reveal the unexpected. Step inside, leave the familiar behind and explore a completely new world without the distraction of phones and watches.
9 kilometres of outdoor art
For fans of murals and lovers of fresh air, the Street Art Route is a must. This nine-kilometre route takes you past some of Utrecht’s most striking murals and urban artworks. Take time to look up near Hoog Catharijne shopping centre to see a giant teapot on the car park roof. And while you are exploring, don’t miss the whimsical ‘peeping horn’ at Mariaplaats.
Tired of all the walking but not of the art? Take a break at art café NAR, a perfect spot to hang out and unwind with good coffee or a nice glass of wine.
Always fresh, always contemporary
Above the historic wharf cellars on the Oudegracht, the GrachtenGalerie exhibits a fresh collection every six to eight weeks, featuring an inspiring mix of emerging and established artists. With a strong focus on diversity, the gallery brings together various disciplines to create a broad and engaging artistic experience. Open Wednesday to Saturday, from noon to 5.00 pm.
