5x in, on and by the water
Are you a water lover, or do you prefer chilling in a hammock by the waterside? Utrecht and the surrounding area offer the best of both worlds – unwind in a tranquil paradise by a lake or canal or immerse yourself in the hubbub of city life. Here are our top five water-related things to do:
1. Take a swim
There are several areas of natural beauty within short cycling distance of Utrecht where you can enjoy being in, on or by the water any time of year. Take a windsurfing lesson on Maarsseveense Plassen or go to the beach at Haarrijnse Plas for a swim.
2. SUP along the canals
You can’t get away from the water, even in the city centre. The centuries-old canal network and the historic Singel are truly spectacular. Do you want to get active, acquire a different take on Utrecht and help the city become cleaner and greener? You can take part in one of the monthly SUP clean-ups on Utrecht’s canals.
3. Canoe by night
Did you know that from April to October when there’s a full moon, you can canoe through the city by night? Paddle along Utrecht’s beautifully illuminated canals as the sun sets over the city. Take a break and stop at one of the many pubs and bistros. And the highlight? Passing under several of the city’s lowest and darkest bridges – an unforgettable end to your canoe trip.
4. Waterside cafés
Need to cool down or get a breath of fresh air? Utrecht has plenty fantastic waterside cafés. Gaze at the rippling water and enjoy a nice cocktail or beer and meal – you won’t be disappointed. Spoil yourself and appreciate the excellent service at these top-class venues. Sunglasses on and unwind!
5. Lap around the singel
Utrecht’s singel is a listed Dutch heritage site steeped in history and a green haven where the locals like to meet and relax. Walk, jog, take the dog or pushchair, or embark on a boat trip around this historic canal ring – a great way to spend time together all year round.
There’s so much to see along the banks of the singel – from the unique architecture to the city’s stunning parks. Take the six-kilometre walk around the singel and discover the beauty.
